Chapter Eleven

Step Eleven: There should be a bit of truth in every lie. Makes it harder for people to know you’re conning them that way.

What will the lie be tonight? Better question, what will the truth be?

“You’re not a killer.” She was adamant. And trying to deal with the barrage of devastating info he’d just dropped on her. Mental note, when Seth keeps secrets, he keeps them helluva deep.

“You don’t know what I am.” He turned away from her.

Just turned away. Like he was going to drop his little I-plan-to-kill bombshell and stroll off. “Nope. Not how this works.” So she grabbed his arm.

His steely muscles tensed beneath her touch. “It’s how I work.”

“You don’t get to casually confess a murder plan to me and walk away.”

He looked down at her hand on his arm. Heat seemed to singe through her fingertips. She ignored the flare because that burning awareness tended to happen whenever she touched him. Such a bad sign.

Another bad sign? Seth planning to kill.

“There is nothing casual about my plan. It’s something I’ve been working on my whole life.” His jaw flexed. “Then my dad dropped his bombshells on me. The night of his murder, he told me—no, enough. Enough fucking soul baring for one night. I get that I have to rip myself open to keep you, but enough.”

He had to rip himself open? “Who told you that?”

He pointed toward the luggage. “You were leaving.”

“No, Mr. Jump To Conclusions, I wasn’t. I was getting my gown.” She put her hands on her hips. “So we’re both on the same page, you thought confessing that you intended to murder someone was what would get me to stay if I did happen to be leaving you? Those were your magic words?”

His hand dropped. “You weren’t leaving me?”

“You are planning to kill someone? You get that just dropping that in a conversation isn’t normal, don’t you?”

His eyes glittered. Tension and fury poured from him. “My mother didn’t die right away. She had bullets in her back. One bullet had torn through her chest on its way out of her. My mom’s blood was all over me, and she kept trying to speak, but she couldn’t. She didn’t die until those bastards had left us alone. She died with my hands on her and with me begging her not to leave me. There were no magic words that would keep her with me. There are no magic words in this world.”

Oh, damn. Her chest ached. No, she ached. For him. Harley wished she could take away all of his pain.

“Stop it!” A sharp order from Seth. He surged toward her. His hand lifted, and, with a touch so tender it took her breath away, he wiped away the tears that she hadn’t even felt sliding down her cheeks. “You’re supposed to be tough.”

“I am, asshole. Tough people cry, it’s a thing.”

“Sometimes, you say ‘asshole’ the way other people say ‘sweetheart.’”

Only to him. Because her voice had softened. She’d softened when he touched her.
